Pointing Netlify Subdomain To AWS EC2 IP

I have seen this post which describes something similar, but I don’t think it’s exactly what I want. I don’t want a redirect. I just want the subdomain to point to the server that is running my Ghost Headless CMS.

I have a mydomain.com - registered with google domains, pointing to netlify name servers with the main site hosted on netlify.

I want to have admin.mydomain.com pointing to an AWS EC2 IP running nginx. I would think I need to create a resource record on netlify like this:

NAME TYPE VALUE TTL
admin.mydomain.com A XX.XXXX.XX.XXX 3600

But I get dns_api mydomain.com - admin.mydomain.com/A: 400 - link exists, all config must be empty

What am I missing?

According to this: Create a subdomain for a Carrd.co page

I need someone from Netlify support to delete my existing record.
