Hello I am helping a client switch from their last contractor to their own Netlify account. I deleted the old site. The new URL is https://distracted-pasteur-47d0ae.netlify.app. But when I try to add the old domain to the new account it says “custom_domain is owned by another account”, need help fixing thank you!
Hey there, this is happening because the custom domain you’re trying to use already exists on Netlify under a different account.
If you have some idea of who might be using the domain (maybe a previous collaborator or an agency you’ve worked with in the past?), the quickest way to get this resolved is for you to contact that person directly and ask them to remove the domain from their account here:
https://app.netlify.com/sites/SITE-NAME/settings/domain#custom-domains > “Options” dropdown > “Remove domain”
If you’re not sure, please verify domain ownership and let us know by responding here when that’s done. If the verification is successful we can remove the domain from the other account so you can use it on yours.
I actually had the username, and password for that account. I removed the domain, then I deleted the site on the account then I logged out and removed the User and Pass from my keychain, and I am still having this error. Would it take time to propagate?
I went ahead and added the TXT record to my DNS for verification. thank you for the link to directions!
Does this record look correct? Just worried about doing it wrong and it costing me more downtime.
I tried adding a dot to the end as the instructions you posted said not to “forget the dot” but bluehost would not let me and gave me a validation error of “cannot add two dots next to each other”
Hi, @jet. The screenshot looks correct but I do not see the record working when I make a query for it:
Even when querying the DNS record directly from one of the four authoritative name servers, the record is not found:
$ dig verified-for-netlify.creative114.com TXT @ns-397.awsdns-49.com +noall +answer ; <<>> DiG 9.10.6 <<>> verified-for-netlify.creative114.com TXT @ns-397.awsdns-49.com +noall +answer ;; global options: +cmd
If there are other questions about how to make the DNS record or if you see the record start working, please let us know.
Thank you for the trouble shooting tool, will use that going forward. So odd the record is in there and its just not showing up. Will contact BlueHost to see what is going on.
Hey Luke, it is working, and is now verifiable!
Hi, @jet, I can also confirm the verification record is working. Now that verification is complete, please feel free to delete that DNS record as it is no longer required.
The conflicting DNS zone as Netlify has now been deleted. It should now be possible to add this domain name to your site or to create a DNS zone for it under your account.
If there are other questions or concerns, please let us know.
Hey guys, thanks for this thread. Dealing with the same issue, transferring a website from one Netlify acc to another (both owned by me), and getting Custom_domain is owned by another account error. What I did:
- In my custom domain name providers panel changed the CNAME property to be pointing to the new address: https://whwb.netlify.app
- In the old Netlify account (https://warehouse.netlify.app/) removed the custom domain name
- Gave it an overnight, since i know these things take some time
You appear to have been using Netlify DNS for this domain. Whilst the domain was removed, a DNS zone remained in place (it wasn’t deleted). I’ve cleaned this up at our end and you should be good to go!
Oh I see, i thought it would get automatically removed together with the domain. Thanks!
